Had a chemical peel in the past 2 weeks

Post Treatment Instructions:

Immediately after the treatment, you may apply an ice pack, as there may be mild swelling. It is normal for the treated area to feel like sunburn for a few hours. You should use a cold compress if needed. Avoid any trauma to the skin for up to 2-5 days, such as bathing with very hot water, strenuous exercise, or massage.

Avoid picking or scratching the treated skin to achieve your best results. If any crusting, apply antibiotic cream. Some physicians recommend aloe vera gel or some other after sunburn treatment such as Desitin. Darker pigmented people may have more discomfort than lighter skin people and may require the aloe vera gel or an antibiotic ointment longer. Follow instructions as specified by your laser professional.

Makeup may be used after the treatment has quit swelling unless there is epidermal bleeding. It is recommended to use new makeup to reduce the possibility of infection. Keep the area moist. Any moisturizer without alpha-hydroxy acids will work.

You may shower after the laser treatments in tepid water. The treated area may be washed gently with a mild soap. Skin should be patted dry and NOT rubbed.

You will experience redness and bruising from five to fourteen days at the treatment. Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds for 1-2 months and throughout the course of the treatment so as to reduce the chance of dark or light spots. Use sunscreen SPF 25 or higher at all times throughout the treatment when going outside.

Avoid tweezing, waxing, bleaching or chemical peels during the course of the treatment. Do not use any irritants such as Retin-A, Benzoyl Peroxide or astringents.

Call your physician’s office with any questions or concerns you may have after the treatment.

Chemical Peels

Book Now

13% TCA Peel – $80 [45 minutes]

TCA peels have been proven to help with acne, pigmentation issues, rough skin texture, wrinkles, scars, or for a refresh of your skin! TCA 13% is used for this service. This is considered a medium depth peel and you should expect some light flaking for several days after. If you’ve never had a chemical peel, this is a good place to start! You must not have had any recent sun exposure or sunburns prior to peel, and cannot be overly exposed to sun for 2-4 weeks after. Regular use of retinol 4 weeks prior to peel is recommended for best results.

ZO 3 Step Peel – $300 [60 minutes]

ZO 3 Step peel is packed with salicylic acid, lactic acid, TCA and retinol, this peel is sure to give impactful and long-lasting results! Your skin MUST be prepped with regular use of retinol x 4-6 weeks prior to this peel. The 3-step peel removes the outermost layers of skin, helping to improve the appearance of tone, texture and smoothness. It stimulates new skin growth, and helps improve acne, melasma, sun damage, fine lines, large pores and dullness.

Stimulator Peel – [30 minutes]

The Stimulator Peel has core ingredients of lactic acid, citric acid, glycolic acid, Kojic acid, and vitamins C and E. This “lunchtime peel” helps exfoliate dead skin cells to minimize the appearance of fine lines and surface pigment. It also helps even skin tone and prevent inflammation. Includes anti-irritant benefits to help calm and soothe the skin.

**Your skin MUST be prepped with a retinol or tretinoin for at least 4-6 weeks before having a chemical peel in order to get the best results and to lessen to risk of complication from the peel. You must hold your retinol/Tret for 72 hours prior to appointment.

Do not have a chemical peel if you have:

  • Used prescription topical medicines or treatments
Used oral medications such as Accutane
Use abrasive scrubs or stronger exfoliants in last 3-5 days before the treatment
Have had prolonged sun exposure within 2 weeks of treatment
Plan to be out in the sun after the treatment (e.g. vacation or outdoor activities)
  • Individuals with darkly pigmented skin should be very cautious about having chemical peels. There is a chance that the pigmentation of the newly healed skin will be different from their current skin color and may result in darker (hyperpigmented) or lighter (hypopigmented) areas. These changes may be permanent.

Post-care chemical peels:

The peeling may take anywhere from 5-10 days on average or longer depending on internal and external factors such as skin type, age, weather, lifestyle, and hormones.  Slight redness and skin sensitivity and flaking can occur as your treatment eliminates dead surface skin cells.  Each treatment may vary.  Other areas of the body will react differently because your skin has a different texture on your face and scalp than on your chest, back, arms, and legs.  The healing process may take longer in those areas.

  • Your skin may take on a rough, patchy, darkened quality a few days after this treatment.  This is normal and expected and it will resolve on its own.  The first areas to peel are usually around the nose and mouth, but can begin anywhere.  Most people begin peeling on the 3rd or 4th day after treatment.  It is also possible to not peel at all.  If this occurs, you will still benefit from the treatment because the skin has exfoliated microscopically.
  • Possible side effects include but are not limited to: mild to extreme redness, temporary tightness, itching, swelling, and dryness of the skin similar to a sunburn or windburn.  This will usually subside in 2-3 days.  Hydrocortisone cream may be recommended if the skin is inflamed or irritated.
  • You may GENTLY apply a cold compress to the treated area(s) as needed for any burning or irritation associated with your treatment.
  • Make sure to avoid excessive heat on the treated area and direct sun exposure of any kind, as well as tanning beds and self-tanners to the treated areas for 4 weeks after treatment.
  • Do NOT engage in strenuous exercise for 2-3 days after treatment because it may exacerbate inflammation.
  • Sweating excessively after treatment can irritate the skin or cause blistering due to the sweat being unable to escape through the top layer of dead skin.  Try to avoid sweating until after you have stopped peeling to avoid lifting the skin prematurely, as this can cause scarring.
  • Do NOT use any acidic products such as retinoids or tretinoins, acne medication products such as Retin-AⓇ, TazoracⓇ, RenovaⓇ, AtralinⓇ, ZianaⓇ, VeltinⓇ, DifferinⓇ, the antibiotic Doxycycline, AHAs (lactic, glycolic, tartaric, etc.), BHAs (salicylic), benzoyl peroxide, vitamin C products, lightening agents such as hydroquinone or any exfoliative products including loofahs or coarse sponges to your skin for 2 weeks after your chemical peel, or more if you notice your skin becomes sensitive to application.  These medications and products increase your photosensitivity, which can significantly increase the likelihood of complications.
  • Do NOT tweeze, pick, rub, exfoliate, wax, use a depilatory, undergo electrolysis, or schedule a facial or cosmetic service such as laser resurfacing, or IPL on a treated area(s) for 4 weeks after your treatment.  To reduce the risk of scarring, you do not want to remove the dry, rough, dead skin faster than your body wants to.
  • Do NOT get your hair dyed until a week after you have finished peeling, if your treatment was performed on the face or neck.  For most people, week 3 post-peel is the best time to have your hair color treated.
  • This procedure can stimulate cold sores.  If you have an outbreak after your treatment, please call the office to inquire about obtaining a prescription.

How to Care for your Skin Post-Peel

  • Cleanse Gently:  Your skin may be fragile for 5-7 days.  Cleanse your skin with COOL water (hot water will cause inflammation to the skin) using only your fingertips – no washcloths, loofahs, buff puffs, sponges, ClarisonicⓇ, etc.  We recommend using the ZO Gentle Cleanser.  Other mild cleansers such as Dove Unscented Bar Soap for Sensitive SkinⓇ, AveenoⓇ, CetaphilⓇ, CeraVeⓇ, or VanicreamⓇ may be recommended, depending on your specific needs.
  • Moisturize Often:  Letting the skin dry out may cause discomfort.  We recommend using ZO Hydrating Creme to help your skin recover.  For strong peels, you may use petroleum jelly for the first few days or as needed on sensitive areas that are peeling. When you start to peel, use a non-comedogenic moisturizer such as AveenoⓇ, VanicreamⓇ, CetaphilⓇ, or CeraVeⓇ, until the skin feels back to normal.  This will promote the healing process by locking in moisture and reducing the chance of a bacterial infection, redness, and irritation.  Use these products several times per day or as needed.  Topical hydrocortisone may be recommended, depending on your specific needs.
  • Protect Your Skin:  Heat and sun exposure can cause inflammation to the skin.  Remember to avoid excessive heat on the treated area and direct sun exposure of any kind, as well as tanning bed sand self-tanners to the planned treatment areas for 4 weeks after treatment.  If you need to be outdoors, make sure to use an umbrella or wear a large-brimmed hat, a pair of sunglasses, and use a physical sunblock (containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide).  We recommend using ZO sunscreens or Elta MD sunscreen.  Both of these products provide broad-spectrum protection from both UVA and UVB rays with no chemical sun filters.  Apply 30 minutes before exposure and reapply often (about every 2 hours) when exposed to the sun.  Other sunscreen products may be recommended depending on your specific needs.
